Villa look for key win over Spurs

2019/20 Premier League

Round 26, part II

14-17 February 2020

Aston Villa will look to boost their survival battle with a home win over Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Sunday 16 February 2020, kick-off at 17:00. The match is one of six spread from 14 to 17 February to complete the 26th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Dele Alli

Villa come into the clash on the back of a key 2-1 loss away to Bournemouth which did nothing to boost their survival hopes. Manager Dean Smith is hoping that Tanzanian striker Mbwana Samatta kicks on to score more goals after a debut Premier League strike against the Cherries.

“He’s certainly a goalscorer and that’s one of our first headed goals all season,” explained Smith. “He had 60 minutes on [28 January] against one of the best teams [Leicester in the Carabao Cup] in the league and he’s managed to get 90 minutes in [against Bournemouth], so he’ll get better and better.”

Tottenham, meanwhile, have been boosted by a recent 2-1 win over Manchester City, followed by a 3-2 triumph against Southampton in an FA Cup replay, though manager Jose Mourinho bemoaned working with an injury-hit squad.

I cannot speak about the progress I want to make because I don't have the players I want. And the team needs players to progress, collectively, tactically and dynamically. We need to have the players, but we don't have the players,” said the Portuguese.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish

In head-to-head stats, Villa and Tottenham have met in 164 previous matches. Spurs have claimed 73 wins compared to 56 for the Lions, while 35 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in August 2019, Spurs claimed a 3-1 home wins courtesy of goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane (two), while John McGinn opened the scoring for Villa.
