On January 3 2019, Liverpool lost to Manchester City. Although the loss would cost the Reds the title, it would also be the start of a staggering streak that currently spans over a year and includes 37 consecutive Premier League games.
The amazing streak began with an away victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, with Mo Salah scoring the only goal of the game just after half time. The Reds would remain undefeated for the rest of the 2018/19 season losing out on the title to City by a single point.
At the start of the 2019/20 season, Liverpool were undoubtedly among the favourites and put the league on notice early beating Norwich City at home 4 -1 on the first weekend. That early win was a sign of things to come as Liverpool continued the streak into the new season.
As of beating the Blades on Thursday 2 January 2020, Liverpool have remained undefeated for 37 games winning 32, drawing 5, and securing 101 points out of a possible 111. The continuation of the streak has seen the Reds tear through the opposition and top the 2019/20 Premier League table with a staggering 13-point lead with a game in hand.
Although remaining undefeated for 37 consecutive games is impressive, it isn’t record breaking just yet. The club is currently 3 games behind Chelsea's 40-game unbeaten run between 2004 and 2005 and 12 behind Arsenal’s 49-game run between 2003 and 2004.
If Liverpool are to replicate the Gunner’s 49-game streak, they will have to go through Spurs and United over the next two weeks, the Merseyside derby in March, and almost if it was destined to be, for the 49th and record-equally game, the Reds will need to beat Manchester City at the Etihad in April.
