Red Bull driver Max Verstappen will be hoping to clinch the Italian Grand Prix title for the first time in his career on September 06.

The Belgian star struggled in last year's race in Monza and he finished eighth having started at the back of the grid due to an engine change penalty.

Verstappen's best performance at the Italian Grand Prix came in 2018 when he finished fifth behind Kimi Räikkönen, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Last year's race was won by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, while Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third respectively.

Verstappen has won one race so far in the 2020 season which was the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix on August 09.

Looking at this year's Drivers' Championship standings, Hamilton is still sitting at the top with Verstappen and Bottas placed second and third respectively.

Verstappen finished third behind Hamilton and Bottas in the most recent race which was the Belgian Grand Prix, while Red Bull's Alexander Albon secured a sixth spot finish.

The Hasselt-born driver admitted that they could not keep up with the dominant Mercedes in Belgium, but he explained that finishing third is better than nothing.

“I couldn’t really keep up with them when they were pushing,” Verstappen said.

“And then from my side I ran out of tyres at the end so the last eight laps I was just backing it out, saving the front tyres so it was not really enjoyable out there today.

“On the medium I didn’t really have a lot of grip. On the hard, initially, I was trying to put a bit of pressure on Valtteri but they told him to speed up and I couldn’t keep up so it was a bit lonely," he added.

“Maybe it was not the most satisfying P3 but it’s still better than nothing so I’m pretty pleased with that.”

Mercedes are placed at the top of Constructors' standings followed by second-placed Red Bull and third-placed McLaren-Renault.
