Top 10 Formula 1 Drivers of All Time

With the world’s best drivers preparing to do battle in Belgium, we’re taking a look at history’s best Formula 1 drivers. Unsurprisingly greats like Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Niki Lauda feature but expect one or two surprises in our list of the 10 all-time greats.

The rankings were compiled by FiveThirtyEight utalising their Elo rating system. The system uses a series of head-to-head results as a way to grade competitors. To rank F1 drivers, researchers used results and drivers from 1950 to the present day. 1950 was chosen as a starting point as it was the inaugural year of the FIA World Championship of Drivers. Each driver was then assigned a base Elo rating with each race result affecting that base rating.

Ayrton Senna

To any Formula 1 fan, it will come as no surprise that Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher take the top two sports. Senna won the Formula One world championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He continued to be a dominate force in Formula 1 right up until the horrific crash during 1994 San Marino Grand Prix that claimed his life. Although he was already 34 years old when he was killed, it is very likely we were robbed of Senna’s best years.

Surprisingly, of the drivers still competing in Formula 1 today, only Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel managed to crack the top 10. Additionally of the top 30 raked drivers, Fernando Alonso is the only other modern driver to feature.
