The Greatest Winning Streaks in Premier League History

In Premier League history, there are a few performances that stand above the rest. These performances are the perfect storm of talent, management, and the fates aligning for that flawless winning streak where defeat seems all but impossible. Below are the five greatest of these performances.

Manchester United – 1999/2000

Man United

During the 1999/2000 season, Manchester United dominated the Premier League eventually winning the title with a staggering 18-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.

Although they looked in supreme form the entire season losing just 3 of their 38 games, from March to August 2000 they were all but unbeatable. During that time, the Red Devils won 11 on the trot only being halted by a 1-1 draw at Ipswich.

Chelsea - 2016/17

Chelsea

At the end of the 2016/17 premier league season, Chelsea had secured the title with a seven-point lead over Spurs.

At the start of the season however, it looked like the beginning of the end for the Blues. The club suffered back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal. As things looked most dire, a simple change that is now considered to be one of the great coaching moments in Premier League history turned the club’s whole season around.

Antonia Conte decided to make the bold move to change the Blues formation to 3-4-3. Under the new formation David Luiz shone at the back while Eden Hazard took control up front. Chelsea’s fate almost immediately turned around as the club built an impressive 13-game winning streak between September 2016 and January 2017.

Arsenal – 2001/2002 to 2002/2003

Arsenal

In February 2002, Arsenal were in contention for the title but were sitting in fourth several points from the top of the log. Just three months later, the Gunners had secured the title in one of the great second-half-of-the-season performances.

On their way to the Premier League title in the 2001/2002 season, Arsenal built a 13-game win streak. It began with a Sylvain Wilford goal against Everton and the club would go on to win every single game they played for the rest of the season.

Arsenal would continue their streak into the new season with a fourteenth win before West Ham brought the streak to an end with a 2-2 draw at Upton Park.

Liverpool – 2018/2019 to 2019/2020

Liverpool

Liverpool closed out the 2018/2019 season in ruthless fashion going on a nine-game winning streak. Despite their heroics, the Reds would narrowly miss out on the title with Manchester City topping the log just one point ahead of Liverpool.

Liverpool went into the 2019/2020 season with the same ruthlessness starting with a 4-2 win over Burnley at home. The Reds would continue on their streak from last season winning an additional 8 games in a row for a combined winning streak of 17 games.

The Reds near-record-breaking run of form would finally be broken by an out-of-form Manchester United, a loss that stunned the soccer world.

Manchester City 2017/18

Man City

The 2017/18 Manchester City Premier League performance is one of the greatest in history. By the end of the season, City had broken the records for the most wins, most goals, and the biggest goal difference in a season. Additionally, the club became the first and currently only Premier League club in history to record 100 points in a single season.

During this staggering moment in the club’s history, Manchester City would put together a staggering 18-game win streak, yet another record to add to the club’s incredible season.
