Reds gain valuable point in race against drop on match-day 23.

There were losses for three of the bottom four sides as matchday 23 of the Uganda Premier League concluded on Sunday evening.

With only Tooro United winning, after claiming a 2-0 win over Police, a result that moved the two teams level on 22 points, the point gained by Express against KCCA proved pivotal in the race to avoid the drop.

The Red Eagles left Lugogo with their heads held high after forcing a 1-1 against defending champions KCCA to move to 28 points, six ahead of Police and Tooro and eight better off than bottom side Proline.

The six-time champions who are now unbeaten in three games, are in 11th position, one better than Kyetume and four ahead of Maroons who they play before the 40-day Chan break.

Mustafa Kizza gave KCCA the lead from the penalty spot after Isa Lumu was adjudged to have fouled Sadat Anaku.

But the Wasswa Bossa coached side regrouped and their pressing game was rewarded when Eric Kambale  robbed KCCA captain and goalkeeper Charles Lukwago of the ball.

The striker then fed Doka Mweru whose goal-bound effort was handled by Musa Ramathan on the goal-line.

The defender was rightly sent off by referee Mashood Ssali and Frank Kalanda stepped up to send young goalkeeper Ali Mwerusi the wrong way from the resultant penalty.

Such is KCCA’s strength at home that they created the better chances thereafter and credit goes to an improved defensive showing in which Lumu recovered from his earlier error to partner the impressive Arthur Kiggundu.

Bbosa had also sprung a surprise by naming young defender Cyrus Kibande in midfield, a shape that he could also adopt for Tuesday’s game against URA.

The result means Vipers now have a four point advantage over KCCA with Villa 10 points behind after the top three teams all failed to win on match-day 23.
