Round 3: Hungarian Grand Prix
Hungaroring, Mogyorod, Hungary
Mercedes will look to continue their domination of the 2020 Formula 1 season when Round 3, the
Hungarian Grand Prix, takes place at the Hungaroring on Sunday 19 July.
The ‘Silver Arrows’ have bossed the campaign thus far, with Valtteri Bottas claiming victory in the opening Austrian Grand Prix, before Lewis Hamilton led a 1-2 for the German giants with a dominant victory at the Styrian Grand Prix this past Sunday – both races were held at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Bottas leads the drivers’ championship with 43 points, but Hamilton is now breathing down his neck with 37 and will hope to claim the lead with victory at the Hungaroring – a track where he has a record seven race victories.

“I don’t why there are some tracks where drivers are stronger at some than others, but this is one of my weaker circuits. So to have a performance like this today…I’m over the moon, so happy,” said Hamilton of his showing at the Styrian GP, having only managed a fourth-placed (due to a time penalty) finish the race before. “I also know though that there is a long way to go.”
Bottas, meanwhile, was happy to come home in second place after struggling somewhat in a wet qualifying session on Saturday.

“Obviously Lewis started from the pole and had a good start, he could really control the race and there was not as much happening as last weekend,” the Finn said after the race. “But from my side, starting fourth, I think today was damage limitation. Still got good points, still leading, so it’s not too bad.”
Mercedes and Hamilton claimed a storming win at last season’s Hungarian Grand Prix, with the world champion chasing down Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the closing laps and executing a perfect pass before going on to victory.
A repeat performance this year would be no surprise, with the ‘Silver Arrows’ cars the clear frontrunners in terms of both qualifying and race pace – hence they already have double the number of points as their nearest chasers, McLaren-Renault, in the constructors’ championship (80 points to 39).
