Max Verstappen looks to defend Austrian GP crown

2019 Formula 1 season, Round 9

Austrian Grand Prix

Red Bull Ring, Spielberg
Sunday 30 June

Max Verstappen will be looking to defend his Austrian Grand Prix crown when Round 9 of the 2019 Formula 1 season is held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Sunday 30 June.

Verstappen has been one of the most consistent performers of the 2019 campaign, finishing all but one of the races inside the top four (the exception was the Canadian Grand Prix, where he came home in fifth).

Verstappen won the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix.

As a result he is placed fourth on the Drivers’ Championship standings, just 11 points adrift of third-placed Sebastian Vettel – a fine achievement considering the Red Bull is clearly outpaced by both the Mercedes and Ferrari.

Yet at Red Bull’s home race in Spielberg, Verstappen will be hungry for more than just another solid drive: the Dutchman memorably won last year’s Austrian Grand Prix and will be aiming for a second triumph at the venue.

Red Bull teammate Pierre Gasly will be under pressure for a strong showing.

Yet he will need the support of his teammate Pierre Gasly to make this a reality, and the Frenchman has thus far underwhelmed in his first season in a top team, finishing inside the top five just once in 2019.

If Gasly can up his level and the Red Bull proves adept at challenging the silver and red cards around the fast and flowing circuit, then Verstappen could be king in Austria for the second year in a row.
