2018/19 Copa Del Rey

Round of 16 – 2nd leg

Wednesday, January 16th

LEGANES VS REAL MADRID – ESTADIO MUNICIPAL DE BUTARQUE – AGG: 0-3

Real Madrid will take a healthy 3-0 lead to Leganes, a small town just outside the capital, for their Copa Del Rey Round of 16 2nd leg clash on Wednesday. Elsewhere, Sevilla host Bilbao with three away-goals to their names before the night is rounded up by Atletico Madrid’s match with Girona at the Wanda Metropolitano, with the tie evenly poised at 1-1.

Leganes are lurking in 13th place on the La Liga log, just three points away from the dreaded relegation zone although Los Pepineros gave their league ambitions a huge lift this past weekend when Youssef En-Nesyri’s solitary goal helped sink Huesca 1-0 at home – Leganes’ first win from their last six matches in all competitions.

Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Leganes last week was their first in three games since returning from the FIFA Club World as champions last month. They followed that up with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Real Betis on Sunday – a result which lifted Los Blancos into 4th place in the league standings.

Hardly the El Clasico test that Barcelona presents or the bitter rivalry that their cross-town rivals Atletico bestow, Wednesday’s affair affords little Leganes the opportunity to lock horns with the mighty Real Madrid once more in a match that can, technically, classified as a local derby.

Leganes have only beaten Madrid once in their eight previous meetings – an historic 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in this competition last season, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the process and booking their spot in the semi-finals on the away goals rule.

Real Madrid are seeking a fifth straight victory over Leganes in all competitions. Sergio Ramos scored from the penalty spot in the reverse fixture – his second successive goal from the penalty spot against Leganes while French forward Karim Benzema has found the back of the net three times in his last five outings against Leganes.
