Hassan Alwi wins Jinja Rally

The second round of the National Rally Championship in Jinja produced more competition compared to the first event held in Mbarara last month.

Some of the top crews that missed the Mbarara rally made it to Jinja to look for their first points of the NRC standings.

The crew of Hassan Alwi and Joseph Kamya came out on top after a dominant start. With several top crews facing challenges, Alwi remained on course and went on to take the event.

Alwi took an early lead in the first two sections of the event on day one. He led by 12 seconds before the super special stage, which was later cancelled due to safety concerns.

Defending champion Yasin Nasser’s car went off track and ran into spectators. Nasser then pulled out of the event in what he termed as respect for those injured in the process.

Chritakis Fitidis, whose navigator was injured in the same incident as he was recording his times,  also pulled out of the event.

Ponsiano Lwakataka made up for the DNF in Mbarara by finishing second in Jinja. He was only one minute and ten seconds behind Alwi.

Arthur Blick Jr completed the podium with a third place finish having missed the first event on the calendar.

Kepher Walubi, who was competing in front of his home crowd, finished fourth while Fred Busulwa finished in fifth position.

The 100 points collected are Alwi's first of the season. With the 50 points collected, Busulwa went top on the NRC standings with 130 points.

The crew of Duncan Mubiru and Musa Nsubuga couldn't add to the maximum points collected in Mbarara after retiring in the third section of day two.

Ronald Sebuguzi, Ashraf Ahmed, Godfrey Lubega are among the retirees of the event.  Of the 42 crews that started the event, only 20 managed to complete.
