City look to pound the Hammers

2019/20 Premier League

Round 26, part I

8-9 February 2020

Manchester City will look for a convincing home victory when they welcome West Ham United to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 9 February 2020, kick-off at 19:30. The match is one of four spread from 8 to 9 February as part of the 26th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

City suffered a sixth defeat of the Premier League season when they were beaten 2-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend. The loss leaves the Citizens just two points clear of Leicester City in the race for second place.

Manager Pep Guardiola insists his side did not perform poorly against Spurs, but merely failed to take their chances.

"We played well, but we lost the game. (Spurs) arrived in (the box) twice and scored two goals. I don't have too many things to say about our performance," he said. "We have to accept it and work on that. We need to analyse that. Football is to create chances and concede few. We played to win the game. I didn't see a lack of desire to win or that we're far away."

West Ham, meanwhile, twice relinquished a two-goal lead to be held 3-3 by Brighton & Hove Albion, extending their winless run to six matches across all competitions and leaving them inside the relegation zone.

"I thought the performance, in the main, was very good," said manager David Moyes. "I thought we made a couple of really, really silly mistakes and, because of that, it obviously labels the team because we are a team, but for long periods of the game our performance was very good.

"We were 2-0 up and 3-1 up and we carried a threat at different times, as did they. I thought we did an awful lot of good things, but it's been tarnished by a couple of mistakes.”

In head-to-head stats, Man City and West Ham have met in 111 previous matches. The Citizens have claimed 57 wins compared to 37 for the Hammers, while 17 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at the London Stadium in August 2019, City racked up a 5-0 away win thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling (three), Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero.
