Charles Leclerc the home-town favourite for Monaco GP

2019 Formula 1 season, Round 6

Monaco Grand Prix

Circuit de Monaco, Monte Carlo

Sunday 26 May 2019

Charles Leclerc will be the home-town favourite when the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix is held as part of the Formula 1 season on Sunday 26 May.

The young Monegasque driver has had an up and down season with Ferrari thus far, but will hope that the street circuit provides him with the inspiration and opportunity to pick up a first career win.

Leclerc hails from Monaco and will have strong home support

Leclerc has often looked to have superior pace compared to his vastly more experienced teammate Sebastian Vettel, but the German has had the better race craft thus far and is therefore higher up on the Drivers’ Championship standings.

Vettel and Leclerc came him in fourth and fifth place at the Spanish GP earlier this month, leaving the younger man seven points adrift of his stable mate.

Ferrari have struggled to claim victories in the principality since the turn of the century

While Ferrari have been unable to challenge Mercedes’ dominance, they will also be concerned that Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has regularly got the drop on them this season and is the ‘best of the rest’ in drivers’ terms behind the ‘Silver Arrows’ duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

In addition, the Monaco circuit is more likely to suit the Red Bull than the Ferrari, meaning Leclerc and Vettel will have their hands full in trying to compete with Verstappen, let alone chasing down Mercedes.
