Betway Kobs defeat Heathens to defend Uganda Cup title

Uganda Cup final

Betway Kobs 15-14 Heathens

Betway Kobs got converted try six minutes after the hooter to break Heathens' hearts and defend the Uganda Cup title Saturday at King's Park, Bweyogerere.

The Legends outfit grabbed a narrow 15-14 win with half back Ivan Kirabo nailing a last gasp conversion to seal the victory.

Having got Joseph Aredo, Pius Ogena, Ian Munyani and Adrian Kasito back from the national sevens side, Kobs' were comfortable playing the running game.

Heathens got the first try of the game after sustained possession that saw Mike Otto score off a maul. Brian Asaba then picked up the ball from a break down, fed Aredo who also passed to Justin Kimono.

Kimono broke the Heathens line to go over for Kobs and level matters. Joseph Oyet scored two penalties and a drop goal for Heathens as they regained control of the game.

Ivan Kirabo scored a penalty for Kobs to cut the deficit to 6 points (14-8). Kobs kept asking questions even after the hooter and the pressure led to a Robert Aziku try.

With the deficit cut to a single point, Kirabo, with the final piece of action, stepped up and split the posts to send Kobs into celebrations and Heathens down on their knees.

The Blue Army managed to lift the first title of the rugby season with the league set to kick off in two weeks’ time. The two sides also face off in a Friday night league opener at Kyadondo on Friday 29th.
