Although the Champions League has only be around since 1992, the tournament has been around for significantly longer. What we now know as the Champions League was created in 1955 and went by the name, the European Champion's Cup or European Cup. This early version of the tournament featured a simple knockout format and was only open to the champion clubs from each participating country's national league. When the tournament was rebranded in 1992, a round-robin group stage was added and the possibility of multiple entrants from certain countries was introduced.
