Why you should be watching MotoGP

This weekend, the MotoGP circus travels down under for the 2018 Australian GP. After Marc Marquez took the chequered flag in Japan to secure his seventh world title, the door may be open for the likes of Jack Miller to steal a cheeky win late in the season.

If you’re new to MotoGP and you’re not sure if it’s worth your time, let me assure you, it is. MotoGP is one of, if not the, most exciting wings of motorsports. With speed and unbelievable athleticism, riders risk life and limb week after week to entertain. If you enjoy the action, don’t forget, you can bet on the Australian GP at Betway.ug.

Speed

Earlier this month, Ducati Team rider Andrea Dovizioso broke the all-time MotoGP speed record during the Gran Premio d'Italia Oakley. During the race, Dovizioso was clocked in at 356.5km/h. This isn’t an outlier either. The average MotoGP motorcycle has a top speed well over 320km/h and during a race, riders hit an average speed of 160km/h. All this with little to no protection from the elements or a disastrous end that could end a rider’s carrier.

Cornering

In the world of motorsport, nothing compares to the spectacle of a MotoGP rider cornering at high speed. The action seems to defy gravity. It appears that the riders are on the very edge and at any second their wheels could slip out and they could be sent flying into the nearest wall. This seems all the more possible when you discover that when cornering, the surface area of each wheel still in contact with the road is no bigger than a 50-shilling coin.

Endurance

You might think spending the whole race sitting down would make the sport not all that taxing physically. Nothing could be farther from the truth. MotoGP riders go through intense cardiovascular conditioning and strength training. During a race, a rider will be expected to man handle a motorcycle at least twice his weight while wearing thick dark leather in sometimes scorching heat. The average rider loses two liters of water during the race to sweat.

Grid girls

The presence of beautiful women on motorsport grids around the world is nothing new. However, in the last two or so seasons, many motorsport franchises have decided to do away with the tradition. MotoGP will, however, continue to have one of the best shows on television for at least one more season.
