URU ready to give teams prep time before league resumption

When the COVID-19 pandemic is eventually out of the way and sports action returns, Uganda Rugby Union will allow teams at least ten days to get back into shape.

The Uganda Rugby Union released a statement on Thursday urging teams to prepare for a possible return to action in May.

The league was suspended following a directive from the government to suspend all public gatherings including sports activities in the country.

This afternoon, URU has issued another statement citing the possibility of resuming competitions in May.

“Should the ban be lifted on 18th April 2020, Nile Stout Premiership will resume 2nd May, as will the regional leagues." Reads part of the statement from the Union.

Betway Kobs head coach Davis Kiwalabye is one of those happy with the decision.

He revealed that while his team has been undertaking individual practice at home, there is need for some contact sessions before returning to full league action.

“The players are doing individual work at the moment because of the situation we have. We advised them on what to do and they are all trying to do their best,”

The former Rugby Cranes half back added, "Of course it is very important that we get time to prepare after this period. The players will need contact sessions before playing."

Kobs are second on the log, five points behind table leaders Hima Cement Heathens.

With Heathens boasting a better points difference, Kobs will have to win all their games first and hope that Heathens falter somewhere.

Pirates and Heathens are some of the teams Kobs have to face in the remaining five games of the season.

Meanwhile URU will await communication from  Rugby Africa to see the way forward in regards to national teams' engagements.

The annual Elgon Cup clash between  Uganda and Kenya may also have to be rescheduled.

All the plans in place will be guided by how the current situation unfolds as the government continues to try and stop the spread of the virus.
