Ugandan pros chase podium on Safari Tour in Entebbe

The Safari Tour Series has expanded for the 2019-2020 to cover other nations like Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

With the Kigali Golf Club closed for some time, it means Uganda wins the right to host a fourth next week at the Palm Goldings’ Serena Golf Resort in Kigo.

But first, Uganda will host the fourth leg of the Safari Tour when 56 players converge at the par-71 course to compete for the biggest chunk of the Shs40m (over $10000) money purse at the Entebbe Open.

Entebbe Open is second Ugandan event on the Tour after the Uganda Professionals’ Open played in Kigo back in September.

Now home-based players are seeking to make most of the stage at Entebbe as the Tour is a route to the 2020 Magical Kenya Open, which is part of the PGA European Tour.

“My target is to win,” said Uganda’s leading pro Phillip Kasozi. Kasozi has 80 points and is ranked ninth on the Safari Tour standings.

He did not score points at the Nyali Country Club and the Royal Nairobi Club events in Kenya, implying he must maximize home advantage.

“The home leg is always important,” he said of the 72-hole competition. Even if he has not won an event since triumphing at Serena Open in Kigo a year ago, Kasozi has not fared badly at home.

He came third, fourth and joint-seventh at the JBG, Independence and the Kinyara Open tournaments.

There are two other Ugandans ranked in the top 30 places on the Safari Tour with Abraham Ainamani in 18th place with 40 points while Opio Onito Jnr is 22nd with 33 points.

After a total 12 legs, the top ranked eight players will qualify automatically to the Kenya Open and there will be a play-off to determine the last two places.
