Uganda to face Cape Verde at Afrobasket Qualifiers

The Uganda men's basketball team, the Silverbacks, will face Cape Verde in the qualifiers for next year's FIBA Afrobasket set to be held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Cape Verde are the latest side to join Group E of the Qualifiers after defeating both South Sudan and Chap in an invitation pre-qualifier held in Cameroon.

The group already had Uganda, Egypt, and Morocco and Cape Verde will now look to have their say in the final qualifying round.

The Islanders defeated South Sudan 91-85 to confirm their spot having beaten Chad in their first game of the round-robin tournament held at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex.

The final qualifying round is slated for the last weekend of November in Alexandria, Egypt and the second phase in February next year.

Silverbacks coach Mandy Juruni is confident Uganda can progress from the group to the finals.

"I like our chances in the group," Juruni said after learning of the final team in group E.

"We have played Egypt and Morocco and they both had to dig deep to beat us.

"We expected Cape Verde to be the third team because we have seen them play before and they are a good team," he added.

The Silverbacks have been training for the last three weeks and have a camp planned for next month in Egypt.

The camp in Egypt is meant to bring together six locally based players and the foreign based lot as well as head coach George Gallanopoulos.
