Uganda Sevens finish ninth in Uruguay to qualify for Hong Kong 7s

Uganda Rugby Sevens will be part of the HSBC World Series Qualifiers in Hong Kong later this year.
 
This is after the team’s ninth place finish in Montevideo, Uruguay ensured they ended the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in seventh place.
 
Uganda defeated Zimbabwe 26-24 in an epic 9th place final.
 
Betway Kobs’ Pius Ogena gave the Cranes an early lead after being fed by teammate Ian Munyani.
 
Zimbabwe responded in spectacular fashion as they registered three unanswered tries.
 
The Zimbabweans led 19-05 going into the halftime break and looked on course to take the ninth spot.

After the restart, Solomon Okia reduce the deficit with a try under the posts and Philip Wokorah easily converted to add the extras.
 
Zimbabwe stretched their lead again as Shingi Katsvere touched down for a 24-12 cushion.
 
Uganda were quick to respond through captain Michael Wokorach and the deficit was back to five points.
 
Philip Wokorach completed the job with a converted try for the Cranes to lead 26-24 deep into the dying minutes and held on for the victory.
 
The victory was enough for Uganda to finish among the top eight teams in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series and book their place at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament.
