Uganda's Boxing Bombers Prepare For Championships

A group of 19 boxers started residential training Monday in preparation for the forthcoming Africa Boxing Championship set to start on May 27 in Congo Brazzaville.
The national boxing team, the Bombers, will reside at the National Council of Sports hostel in Lugogo until they depart for the competition in May. For head coach Patrick Lihanda, the best team was selected and only the best is expected of every fighter who will don the national colours at the championship. “It is a good team and I am impressed with the levels of fitness as well as the improved technique,” Lihanda revealed after the national team trials over the weekend.
At the trials held before the naming of the final team, there were upsets with Nasil Bashir, who recently captained the national team in the Mabingwa Wamabingwa championship in Tanzania, falling to Marvin Ssali in the Bantam weight category by split decision. The boxers who made the team are all in high spirits and hope to make the nation proud at the competition.
One such fighter Musa Shadir, who made light work of Raymond Mugisha in the trials, believes he has all it takes to raise Uganda’s flag at the continental showpiece come May. Shadir is unbeaten since last year and believes he can help bring glory to his home country. “I want to set records in boxing and that is what inspires me every other day,” he said.
Since the team started their training early this month, Betway has contributed to their feeding and will continue to support the team as they prepare for the Championship in Congo Brazaville.
