Uganda finish second at Africa Sevens


Uganda Rugby Sevens team finished second at this year’s Africa Sevens Championship held in Johannesburg, South Africa over the weekend.
 
The two-time Africa champions lost 29-0 to neigbours Kenya in a one sided final.
 
Kenya were simply too good for the Cranes and ran in five tries through team captain Andrew Amonde, Daniel Taabu, Oscar Dennis (2) and Jeff Oluoch.
 
Uganda had earlier defeated defending champions Zimbabwe at the semifinal stage. Mauritius and Senegal are the other countries Uganda defeated enroute to the final.
 
Only Kenya defeated Uganda at the tournament in a group game and later in the final. Kenya’s victory guarantees them a direct ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as African champions.
 
The now join hosts Japan, the four top series teams from 2018-2019 – Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa and United States, Oceania Champions Australia, European Champions England, North and South American Champions Canada and Argentina.

Uganda’s only hope of qualifying for the Olympics is in the Repechage tournament to be held after the Asia Sevens set for November 23-24 in South Korea.
 
Uganda and Zimbabwe will represent Africa at the repechage that features runners up from the six tournaments. For the Ugandan players, attention will now shift to their local clubs with the Uganda Cup finale set for this weekend.
