Uganda Cranes in Pot 2 for 2022 World Cup draw

Local football body Fufa has set out a grand plan to have Uganda feature at the Fifa World Cup during the 2026 edition in the Americas.

However, that dream can be achieved earlier than expected if the Uganda Cranes beat the odds for the 2022 World Cup set time be held in Qatar.

The Cranes will be among the 40 teams that will selected in the 2022 World Cup Qualification draw set to be held in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday night.

Seeking to qualify for the first time in 11 attempts, Uganda is one of the top-26 nations (as of July 2019) that are entering the qualification phase at the second round.

Some 14 other countries progressed from the first round to make it here. And Uganda is in Pot 2 with other countries like three-time World Cup finalists Ivory Coast, 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) winners South Africa and 2012 African champions Zambia.

Uganda cannot meet any Pot 2 members but will face one opponent from Pots 1, 3 and 4 to form a group which will be played on round-robin basis in home and away format.

It means the Cranes can face Egypt again with whom they clashed in the road to Russia 2018, the best show ever in quest for a World Cup place.

The other big wigs in Pot 1 include Afcon champions Algeria, DR Congo, 2021 Afcon hosts Cameroon, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Ghana and Mali.

Other East African countries Kenya is in Pot 3 whereas Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Djibouti are in Pot 4.

A total 10 groups to compete in the second round beginning in March 2020 and ends in October, 2021.

The group winners move to the third round where they will play in two-legged knockout ties to be played in November, 2021 to determine the five African representatives to Qatar.
