Uganda Cranes confident of qualification despite Burkina Faso draw

Uganda Cranes will have to avoid defeat in Malawi on Monday to confirm qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations.

This is after failing to get maximum points off Burkina Faso while Malawi won 1-0 away against South Sudan.

The goalless result leaves Uganda on 8 points, only one ahead of third-placed Malawi with the two sides meeting in a do-or-die affair on Monday.

For Cranes captain Denis Onyango, there's confidence in the camp ahead of the Monday game.

‘I’m happy with the performance of the boys, especially in the second half. We played better football and created more chances," the skipper said after the game on Wednesday.

"It is still in our hands despite getting just a point against Burkina Faso. We must go to Malawi with the right attitude and play for the positive result on Monday.’ he added.

The Cranes struggled to get going in the first half but greatly improved in the second with the introduction of Moses Waiswa and Ibrahim Orit.

It was the first game the team played without head coach Johnathan McKinstry after he was asked to step aside for assessment.

Abdallah Mubiru took charge of proceedings and believes his side were unlucky and should have converted a chance or two for maximum points.

With Burkina Faso already through to the finals, the second slot of the group is up for grabs and the Cranes will have to work for it.
