Uganda 7s start preps for Olympic Qualifiers

Having won the Africa 7s championship in 2016 and 2017, finishing 3rd in 2018 is considered an underachievement for the Uganda Sevens team.

With the showpiece set for November in South Africa, Uganda have started preparations to ensure they better last year’s position.

The team will first get a feel of international competition at this year’s Safari 7s set for October 18th-20th in Nairobi, Kenya.

Head coach Tolbert Onyango has started preps with the chosen 19 players expected to fight for the 12 available slots to South Africa.

Betway Kobs wonder kid Nobert Okeny, who was top try scorer in the national sevens championship, has landed a call up.

Okeny’s tries led Kobs to the national 7s title and his call up comes as no surprise.

He joins the more established Kobs’ legion on Pius Ogena, Joseph Aredo, Adrian Kasito and Ian Munyani in vying for slots on the team.

The team is also boosted by the return to action of three members who were permanent fixtures in the set up before getting injured.

Lawrence Sebuliba, Solomon Okia and James Odong are all fit and back in the set up.

This year’s Africa Cup will act as a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and teams are expected to be fully focused on winning the event in Johannesburg.

Defending champions Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar, Zambia, Tunisia, Senegal, Morocco, Namibia, Ghana, Botswana, Mauritius, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria are the countries expected to lock horns in South Africa.
