Betway Power coach Arnold Lando believes his team have got the right mix to try and push City Oilers who have won the last six National Basketball League titles.
This is after the five-time champions made three major acquisitions ahead of the new season.
Experienced Silverbacks guard Syrus Kiviiri was acquired from Pemba Warriors to strengthen the back court while forward Samuel Aguttu joined from 2017 finalists KIU.
Congolese forward Libe Makala meanwhile joined from JKL who lost 3-1 to Power on their first appearance at the playoff semi-final stage.
“Last season we set our goal low we talked about being top of the league and being in the finals,” Mchuda,” coach Arnold Lando stated.
Betway Power had just run out 63-53 winners in a pre-season game against KCCA a fortnight ago.
“They were realistic. We need to behave like champions,” he added.
Lando’s belief in the new team will be under early scrutiny when they come up in the UCU Open.
The-season opening pre-season tournament that starts on Saturday in Mukono.
All three new recruits are expected to have a run out at the two-day tournament.
“We have empowered the team and we believe with the additions we have got because the team was also good last season.”
“Some of the players have left but with the additions we have got minus the players who have left we believe we have the right workforce to deliver the championship,” he added.
The game against KCCA is the only pre-season game of note thus far for the team who are expected to also have Boniface Okello on the team bench.
“We started a bit late we normally start in February. For the last two weeks we’ve been trying to push working on our fitness and conditioning, speed and our agility.”
The UCU tournament is expected to provide the first sneak-peak into the upcoming season with all the 12 topflight teams advertised.
The topflight league is expected to tip off on April 12 with a clash between Betway Power and City Oilers in a repeat of last season’s final that the latter clinched 4-1.
