UCA plans trip to Qatar

The resumption of sports activity in Uganda has endured at a snail pace due to the barricades in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, some sports federations in the country are rising high to see that time left in 2020 doesn’t completely go to waste.

Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) last month held a bubble showpiece for the available top 45 male players in the new Uganda Elite League.

After playing a week-long twenty20 code at Lugogo Oval, now UCA is doing more. They have entered the senior men’s national team for an Invitational T20 tournament in Qatar next month.

A squad of 21 players began training this week at Lugogo under the guise of Davis Turinawe and Jackson Ogwang ahead of the December 15-20 event.

And Turinawe and Ogwang will next week handover to new Cricket Cranes’ coach Lawrence Mahatlane who is expected in the country from South Africa on Monday.

About 16 players who were part of the Elite League across three franchises Royal Varsani Bucks, Mamba Challengers and Aziz Damani Scorpions were summoned to the side in preparations for the trip to the Middle East.

UCA is hoping the event in Qatar comprising other nations like Nepal and Malaysia will help Mahatlane get an early grip of his side which is set to have a busy 2021 following calendar disruptions by Covid-19.

The Cricket Cranes will have engagements in both T20 and 50-over formats at the continental and global front particularly the second round of the ICC World Cricket Challenge League B.

TRAINING SQUAD; Arnold Otwani, Saud Islam, Ronak Patel, Dinesh Nakrani, Roger Mukasa, Riazat Ali Shah, Frank Nsubuga, Brian Masaba, Frank Akankwasa, Kenneth Waiswa, Fred Achelam, Deusdedit Muhumuza, Richard Agamire, Henry Ssenyondo, Zephania Arinaitwe, David Wabwire, Simon Ssesaazi, Siraje Nsubuga, Steven Wabwose, Shahzad Kamal, Trevor Bukenya
