Top three successful Formula One teams

Many teams have come and gone since the first official Formula One race 70 years ago.

We take a look at the top three most decorated teams in the history of the sport.

McLaren

Titles: 8

The British motor racing constructor is the third most successful team as they have clinched eight world championships between 1974 and 1998.

McLaren have won 182 races, 12 Drivers' Championships and eight Constructors' Championships.

Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost (three), Ayrton Senna (three), Mika Häkkinen (two) and Lewis Hamilton are the seven drivers, who have won a total of twelve Drivers' Championships with McLaren.

“Joining this team is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition for me… and is super exciting and motivating. You could even say a dream come true," Mark Cavendish said after joining McLaren ahead of the 2020 season.

"Having worked closely with McLaren in the past, and seen the benefits of their technology and processes, this was an opportunity I jumped at. My relationship with Rod (Ellingworth) goes way back, and he’s been instrumental in helping me develop as a rider and a person.

"I can’t wait to join my new teammates and do everything I can to help us achieve the successes I know will come.”

Williams

Titles: 9

The British motor racing constructor is the second most decorated team having won nine world championships between 1980 and 1997.

This stood as a record until Ferrari surpassed it in 2000. Moreover, they are one of only four teams in Formula One to win 100 races.

Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve are the seven drivers, who have won the Formula One Drivers' Championship for Williams.

Ferrari

Titles: 16

The Italian racing team remains the most successful constructor as they have clinched 16 world championships between 1961 and 2008.

Nicknamed Tifosi, Ferrari have won a record 15 Drivers' Championships for the team and they have also registered the most victories (238).

Alberto Ascari (two), Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, John Surtees, Niki Lauda (two), Jody Scheckter, Michael Schumacher (five) and Kimi Räikkönen are the nine drivers, who have won the Drivers' championship with Tifosi.

"I think that's the first compliment I've had from Ferrari in these 13 years! Honestly I don't remember them ever mentioning me, ever, so thank you! I'll take it," current Formula One champion Lewis Hamiton of Mercedes thanking Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto for praising him.

"It doesn't really mean anything, it's all talk, but it's nice that finally, it's taken all these years for them to recognise maybe, but I'm grateful.

"It's positive. I think it's never a waste of time ever to be nice to someone. It has been a long, long, long time and a team that I've always appreciated over the years, so to own the respect from someone from there who's obviously very high up is not a bad thing."
