Justin Thomas will be looking to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open title for the first time when he competes at the TPC Scottsdale.

The American star is one of the best golfers in the world at the moment and he is currently placed third on the Official World Golf Ranking.

Thomas experienced a breakout year in 2017 winning five PGA Tour events, including the PGA Championship.

The PGA Championship was his maiden major championship and also clinched the FedEx Cup championship in the same year.

Thomas became the 21st player to top the Official World Golf Ranking after the 2018 Players Championship.

The Kentucky-born player replaced his compatriot Dustin Johnson as the world number one golfer, but he lost that ranking after four weeks when the latter won the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Thomas is coming off a successful year (2020) as he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii for the second time.

The 27-year-old then won the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational at TPC Southwind in Tennessee by three strokes over four other players.

This was the second time that Thomas had won the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and his 13th career victory on the PGA Tour.

Thomas recently drew criticism for using the homophobic slur "faggot" to express anger over a missed putt during the third round of the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The highly-rated golfer has expressed contrition over the incident and he is keen to make things right as he prepares for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“I’m clearly not proud of what I said. It’s humiliating. It’s embarrassing. It’s not me. It’s not a word that I use, but for some reason, it was in there,” Thomas said.

“And that’s what I’m trying to figure out, as to why it was in there. It’s going to be a part of this process and training program or whatever I need to do, not only to prove to myself.

"But prove to my sponsors and prove to these people that don’t know who I am that is indeed not the person I am.”
