Justin Thomas will be determined to successfully defend his Sentry Tournament of Champions title at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

The American star is a former world number one who had his breakout year in 2017 when he won five PGA Tour events. This includes the PGA Championship, his maiden major championship, while he also won the FedEx Cup championship that year.

Thomas became the 21st player to top the Official World Golf Ranking in May 2018 after competing in the 2018 Players Championship.

The 27-year-old won last year's Sentry Tournament of Champions which was held at the Kapalua Resort on the island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago, Maui.

Thomas won in a playoff over Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed to secure his second Sentry Tournament of Champions title.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, Thomas clinched his maiden title in 2017 when the competition was still known as the SBS Tournament of Champions.

It was his third PGA Tour win having won two back-to-back CIMB Classic trophies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016 and 2017.

Thomas will now be hoping to emulate Gene Littler, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer as well as Stuart Appleby, who have won the Tournament of Champions three times.

The 2017 PGA Championship winner will be oozing with confidence after winning the PNC Championship with his father Mike Thomas in December 2020.

“One hundred percent it was [different], it was the most enjoyable. More emotional than other victories. I wanted my dad to make that putt [at No.18] so bad," Thomas said.

"Obviously, we wanted to win and we wanted to play well, it’s crazy to say going into the tournament that a part of you just doesn’t care. We’re here to be father and son and just have fun and enjoy this special moment together.”
