According to a new study, the Reds were the
English Premier League’s unluckiest team during the 2017/18 season dropping a staggering 12 points. The study conducted by ESPN, Intel, and the University of Bath took into account disallowed goals, and incorrect decisions on penalties and red cards to ascertain which clubs drop or gained points.
The
ESPN Luck Index took into account several factors. The calculations took into account disallowed goals, incorrectly allowed goals, penalties that should been awarded and penalties that were awarded but shouldn’t have been, incorrect red card decisions, red card incidents that were missed, deflected goals, and goals that were scored when injury time ran long.
In addition to calculating the number of points each team gained or lost, the study rearranged the Premier League table according to the revised point’s tallies. Liverpool jumped from fourth to second while Manchester City remained well ahead of the pack in pole position despite dropping three points.

Manchester United and Burnley were the luckiest Premier League teams of the 2017/18 season. United picked up 6 points through poor decisions. Without the boost, the Red Devils would have dropped two places from a respectable second to fourth. Although they picked up four points as the second luckiest Premier League team, Burnley’s table position would have remained unchanged.
