Twenty-two clubs have won the UEFA Champions League since the inception of the competition/or renaming of it 1955.

Here are the most successful teams in the history of the Champions League (formerly known as the European Cup).

FC Barcelona

The Spanish giants are arguably one of the two biggest clubs in the world alongside Real Madrid having lifted the continental title five times.

Barcelona won their first European Cup with a 1-0 win against Sampdoria in 1992 under the guidance of the Dutch coach Johan Cruyff.

Since then, Barca has won the competition four additional times, in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015 with their current captain Lionel Messi.

Barcelona has established themselves as one of the strongest sides in European competitions, when measured in UEFA coefficients.

Bayern Munich

Titles: 5

The Bavarians are the most decorated German club in the history of the Champions League having won it five times.

Bayern won their maiden title in 1974, beginning their own three-year period of domination as they also clinched the trophy in 1975 and 1976.

They then had to wait 25 years for their next title when German coach Ottmar Hitzfeld guided the team to a win over Spanish side Valencia in the 2001 final.

Bayern added their fifth trophy in 2013 after defeating rivals Borussia Dortmund in the first-ever all-German final.

"(If) I have to choose then obviously it's the moment I lifted the European Cup in London," 2013 Champions League winning captain Philipp Lahm said.

"I can't really put my feeling of happiness into words. Our hard work paid off at last, it worked out for us at last, and I finally had the thing in my hands.

"It was so thrilling and a magnificent moment."

They lifted their fifth trophy in 2005 when they defeated Italian giants AC Milan on penalties in the final, having come back from 3-0 down at half-time.

The final, played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, is often regarded as one of the best in the history of the tournament.

Their sixth title was won last season when they beat Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

AC Milan

The Red and Blacks remain the most decorated Italian club in this competition having won seven titles.

In 1963, Milan lifted their maiden title after defeating Portuguese giants SL Benfica which made them the first Italian side to win the European Cup.

Legendary Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi led the Red and Blacks to two back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990 after his compatriot Nereo Rocco guided the team to the 1969 trophy.

They have since added three more trophies, two of which they won under the guidance of their former player Carlo Ancelotti in 2003 and 2007.

Real Madrid

Titles: 13

The Spanish giants dominated European football in the early years as they clinched the first five trophies and they also won it in 1966.

Since then, Real has won the competition seven times, in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 - making them the most decorated team in the history of the tournament.

They established themselves as one of the strongest sides in European competitions when measured in UEFA coefficients.

French legend Zinedine Zidane took over as manager of Los Blancos in 2016 and won three Champions League trophies in a row in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

"The secret to winning is an incredible talent and hard work. They are very good players but we work extremely hard," Zidane said after becoming the first coach to win three successive titles.

"It’s a team full of enthusiasm and hunger and they’ve shown it yet again. We got to the final by beating PSG, Juventus and Bayern and now we’ve overcome Liverpool.

"There’s no secret, just hunger, and knowing that nobody else has won what we’ve won.”
