Tentative start date as UPL-Fufa seek way forward

The start of the Uganda Premier League 2020-2021 season was one of the key highlights by the conclusion of the highly anticipated meeting between clubs and domestic football governing body Fufa this week.

The parties set October 17 as the tentative set for the start of next season among other deliberations made at the meeting held at Fufa House in Mengo.

The two and a half hour meeting’s main agenda was to brainstorm on ideas on how best to run club football in the country in preparation for the 2020/2021football season.

Other issues discussed included how to improve communication between the two entities with a discussion on FUFA Competitions reforms deferred to 18th June 2020.

This followed a number of grievances raised by clubs in the running of the league that saw them also seek financial assistance from the federation as a result of effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting also discussed the second phase of FUFA Club Pro Agenda, FUFA Club licensing regulations.
Several clubs were affected by licensing regulations last season with some failing to register players well into the second part of the season.

Betway-sponsored Express FC finished ninth on the 16-team log following a run of three wins and a draw in five before the league was brought to a halt to allow preparations for the aborted Championship of African Nations tournament that was due in Cameroon back in April.
