Tendulkar and the best cricket players to date

The name Sachin Tendulkar comes to mind when you think of the game of cricket.

This is because the Indian sports icon, who holds several cricket records, is widely regarded by many as the greatest cricketer of all-time.

Nicknamed the Little Master, Tendulkar was known for his unique punch style of hitting the ball over square and was a marvel to watch swinging a bat.

Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer of all time in International cricket having scored 34,357 runs during his 24-year career which ended in 2013.

The Little Master was the first batsman to score a double century in a One Day International (ODI) while in the colours of India.

"The number of innings of his (Tendulkar's) I have been able to sit back and watch, I think he is an amazing player," Ricky Ponting, the Australia cricket legend, on Chase Your Sport.

"Look at his stats and records and it's quite incredible for someone to have stayed in the game for 20 years.

"He has set benchmarks for guys like me to chase him and get as close as we can. If I had to last 20 years, I would probably be batting in a wheelchair."

Furthermore, he is the holder of the record for the most runs in both Test and ODI, and the only player to complete more than 30,000 runs in international cricket.

Renowned for his picture-perfect straight drive, Tendulkar became the first batsman to complete 10,000 ODI runs in his 259 innings in 2001.

His 2011 Cricket World Cup-winning moment was voted the Laureus Sporting Moment of 2000-2020 - this moment of Tendulkar has been titled as 'Carried on the Shoulders of a Nation'.

The Little Master's exploits have been praised by Sir Donald Bradman, who is regarded by many as the greatest batsman of all time.

Many considered Tendulkar to have a batting style similar to the legendary Australian batsman Bradman's.

In his biography, it is stated that "Bradman was most taken by Tendulkar's technique, compactness and shot production, and had asked his wife to have a look at Tendulkar, having felt that Tendulkar played like him. Bradman's wife, Jessie, agreed that they did appear similar."

Bradman is considered the second-best cricketer ever as his career Test batting average of 99.94 has been cited as the greatest achievement by any sportsman in any major sport.

The New South Wales-born legend is the first batsman to score a Test triple century (304) at the number 5 position which remains the second-highest Test score for any number 5 batsman.

Then there was Jack Hobbs, who was a consistent cricketer and scored prolifically in both Test and domestic cricket while playing for Surrey and England until his retirement in 1934.

Simply known as the master, Hobbs is the leading run-scorer and century-maker in first-class cricket, with 61,760 runs and 199 centuries.

Hobbs is one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket and was voted one of the five Cricketers of the Century by a 100-member panel of Wisden experts in 2000.
