Ssimwogerere wants transfer backing as Express return to winning ways

Express coach George Ssimwogerere wants a couple of additions made to his team as they seek to improve performances in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League second round.

The Betway-sponsored outfit have made a mixed start to the second round losing their opening two games before bouncing back with a 3-0 win over Proline on Saturday.

Ssimwogerere now believes a few additions will help further improve the team’s results.

“There are players who have interested us but nothing has been finalized yet. A player like Baker Lukooya is available and he could be a very good addition,” Ssimwogerere said of the dimunitve forward he previously worked with at Kira Young.

Ssimwogerere has been under pressure which increased after the club suffered their worst league result, a 6-1 drubbing by Police last week. He delved into the issues that he feels are hindering progress at the six-time league champions.

“I partly take blame for the Police result because I went for an attacking approach that backfired when the opponents scored an early goal that destabilized us. The issue we have is that our players are inexperienced,” Ssimwogerere explained.

“They have never been in this kind of situation. There is a player who kept giving away the ball against Police and when I asked him he said he was scared,” The former Express captain also called for more unity and wants the club’s fans to show support to the players.”

“I started coaching in 2001. Coaches come and go. The problem with Express is that we are not united. You see some of those fans heckling me are in support of the old executive. I even know the ones who hit my car.”

“They want to take charge of the team. They also chased Kefa Kisala and Wasswa Bbosa, so who do they want,” Ssimwogerere said in his post-match reaction after the Proline victory.

Dennis Sserukwaya scored from the penalty spot after Frank Ssenyondo was brought down in the box before an Arnold Sserunjogi own goal and Ivan Ocholit’s second half effort secured victory.

The result left Express 12th on the 16-team log with 21 points after 18 games. More importantly, they stretched their lead over Bright Stars, the team that occupies the third and final relegation spot, to five points.

The Red Eagles return to league action against traditional rivals SC Villa next Wednesday. They must however first negotiate a Uganda Cup fixture against third tier side St. Mary’s this Sunday.
