Ssemuju, Male impress as bombers team takes shape for Olympics qualifier

After a month of action and more than 100 boxers taking part from the preliminary rounds, the national boxing team to the African Olympic qualifiers due in Dakar, Senegal next month was finally selected.

This followed the final elimination games that concluded at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday evening.

13 boxers (five women) were consequently selected from the 26 fighters that took part with African Games silver medalist David Ssemuju among those that impressed most.

In perhaps the most engrossing fight of the day, Ssemuju defeated Yusuf Nkobeza 4-1 on the judges’ count to take the middleweight spot.

The result however only tells half of the story with Nkobeza’s aggressive approach having played a part in several exciting exchanges against his more experienced opponent.

Joshua Male was the other boxer to impress knocking out Edris Mukiibi to book his slot in the light heavyweight category.

Having missed out on African games because of a lack of National ID and subsequently a passport, Male like in many of his fights in the qualifier knocked down Mukiibi in the first round before the fight was stopped.

The biggest highlight in the women’s fights saw Doreen Nassali dump African Games bronze medalist Helen Baleke in the middleweight category.

She will be joined by Catherine Nanziri ( Fly Weight), Susan Akello (feather Weight), Rebecca Amongin (Light weight), Emily Nakalema (Welter Weight)  in the African qualifier in Dakar.
