Sports activities allowed to resume in Uganda

The wait is over for Ugandan sportsmen and women who have been waiting for easing of the lockdown to allow them return to the field.

The Government of Uganda finally gave the green light for sports to return albeit under strict conditions.

Specific health and safety guidelines must be followed by everyone involved before any sort of action.

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni revealed what will be expected of the sports fraternity to ensure there's no increased spread of COVID-19.

“Sports activities shall reopen provided there are no spectators. We must learn to have sports with no spectators,” Museveni said in his national address on Sunday.

He advised that federations look into the idea of having the different activities aired on television for the fans to follow.

At the moment only football has a broadcast partner and the matches of the Startimes Uganda Premier League have been showing on television even before the COVID-19 lockdown.

The other federations must now follow suit and find broadcast partners for their events.

The other condition is mandatory screening of players and those involved for COVID-19 every 14 days.

All those involved in the sports activities are also expected to be quarantined for the entire period of the competition.

“For the open-air sports and tournaments, the players must remain in camp at all times, but the closed arenas and gyms should remain closed,” the president ordered.

Federations like FUFA already crowned league champions since more that 75% Of the league had been played.

FUBA on the other hand cancelled the new season that was scheduled to start just two days after the eventual national lockdown.

Most of the attention will now be on national team events with the Uganda Cranes planning for their AFCON Qualifiers while the basketball national team, Silverbacks, have Afrobasket Qualifiers in November.
