Sport-S Volleyball Club and KCB Nkumba were crowned winners of this year's Nkumba Open tournament on Sunday.
Sport-S defeated defending champions UCU Doves 3-1 to dethrone the university side.
With several faces missing on the UCU team due to injuries, head coach Nason Bwesigye and his charges were not able to defend the title.
Suspended Mark Okurut and injured Elias Isiagi left UCU's reception wanting and Sport-S pounced.
Thon Maker put up an MVP show as he severally negotiated the porous UCU net defence.
The Nkumba Open was seen by many clubs as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming national clubs championship in Lira this week.
“We were using this tournament to gauge ourselves. We have seen the areas to work on before the clubs championships," Sport-S captain Dickens Otim said after the victory.
For UCU, head coach Bwesigye now knows the areas to strengthen ahead of the big tournament in Lira.
“The tournament gave us a good picture of where we stand. Our reception suffered and will have to improve.” he said.
The Doves must now find a solution as they look to defend the national championship title.
The Mukono based outfit won the title to qualify for the Africa Clubs Championship last year. For KCB-Nkumba, not even the absence of head coach Tonny Lakony could stop them.
Under the tutelage of Godwin Ssenyondo, Nkumba raced to a scrappy 3-2 win over UCU Lady Doves to defend the cup.
Having started the final on the front foot, taking the first set, Nkumba collapsed in the second and third and UCU looked destined to victory.
The hosts relied on their experience in big matches to finish off their opponents in the decider. Habiba Namala started scoring in the fourth and fifth set while UCU faltered.
