Silverbacks stars confident of making Afrobasket

Come November 27th-29th, all the attention will be on the Uganda men's basketball team, the Silverbacks as they attempt to qualify for the 2021 Afrobasket.

It has been a tough year for sports in the country and the team only managed to start training in October.

However, not even the length lockdown will stop the players from believing that the team can cross the line and return to Afrobasket.

"The comeback has not been easy for all of us," forward James Okello said after the team's practice session Wednesday evening.

"Seven months of no action is a long time but we have put in work and now getting back to our best," he added.

Before starting their sessions in October, the Silverbacks only knew two of the other teams in group and only learnt of the other, Cape Verde recently.

Okello believes the Silverbacks have a big opportunity to qualify but must prepare well to stand a chance.

"We are in a tough group but all those teams are beatable if we prepare well."

The City Oilers' big man is not the only confident player in the group, Geoffrey Soro also believes Uganda have a big chance and can compete well with proper preparations.

"Our chances are very high if we keep putting in the work," Soro said.

The group of twelve locally based players has been training and will team up with the foreign based lot in a planned camp in Egypt.

Head coach George Gallanapolos is also expected to join the team.
