She Cranes usher in new dawn for South Africa test series

Any discussion about the national netball team She Cranes has over the past decade been dominated by names such as Peace Proscovia, Racheal Nanyonga, Lilian Ajio, Florence Nanyonga, Ruth Meme.

All five played a huge role as the She Cranes returned to the World Cup after a 36-year absence.

The quintet will however all be missing as the She Cranes look to impress after earning an invitation to South Africa for the tri-nation Test Series that starts today against the hosts and Namibia.

Stella Oyella will consequently be the only survivor from the team that played at the 2015 World Cup and will captain the team with fellow shooter Irene Eyaru as her deputy.

“This is our chance as new and young players to showcase our abilities,"shooter Hanisha Muhammed said before the team set off last week.

"We also want to constantly be part of the national team and this is our chance to achieve it."

We believe Uganda can win games against South Africa if we work harder,” she added.

Some of the newcomers such as Nasiimu Mutesi, Tausi Mumena, and Florence Adunia will complement Joan Nampungu and Shaffie Nalwanja in defense.

The center play that had been customized by Ruth Meeme and Betty Kizza has seen new occupants in Sarah Nakiyonga and Susan Mamie Mukala.

The three countries intend to use the series for ranking purposes with Uganda ranked seventh and South Africa fifth in the global standings.

South Africa who are referred to as the Spar Proteas returned to international netball in November last year completing a clean sweep over the Malawi Queens in a three-match Challenge Netball Test series.

Despite the losses, Malawi earned enough ranking points to move above Uganda in the standings where they are currently sixth.
