Unforced errors worry Volleyball Cranes

It is just impossible to win a volleyball game if a team can’t serve and receive the ball.

And yet, for the Volleyball Cranes, the ongoing CAVB African Nations Championship has been characterized by failure in the two departments.

In the team’s first loss at the tournament, the Cranes struggled to deal with Yves Mutabazi’s strong serve and eventually fell 3-2 to hosts Rwanda.

George Aporu and rookie Gideon Angiro commanded the reception alongside Libero Emmanuel Elanyu but all struggled to direct the first ball to the setter throughout the opening set.

Okumu found himself running all over the floor for the second ball in the first set and Rwanda dominated to take it 25-15.
“We didn’t do a good job on reception at the start but that improved as the game went on,” Omuriwe said after her first loss as the Cranes tactician.

However, when the reception stabilized, points were then given away from the service box.

Aporu, Daudi Okello, Dickens Otim, Smith Okumu and Samuel Engwau have all given away points from the service box.

“The unforced errors are too many and we have to sort that,” Omuriwe said after the 3-1 loss to Egypt in the quarterfinals.

The Cranes had started off well against the Pharaohs but faded in the second set as Egypt’s experience came to the fore.

The target for Uganda now is to win two classification games and finish fifth at their maiden continental outing.
