Cape Verde 79-71 Uganda
The Uganda men's basketball team, Silverbacks were knocked out of the Fiba Afrobasket Championship by Cape Verde on Thursday.
Uganda lost 79-71 in the quarterfinals to end their ride at the continental showpiece in Kigali, Rwanda.
Big man Walter Tavares dominated the game and his double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds made the difference.
Uganda started the game on a slow note and failed to defend the three-point line in the first half.
They allowed Nunez Xavier and Joel Almeida open shots and the two drained threes to start Cape Verde's offence.
Deng Geu nailed a three at the end of the first quarter to bring the game to within four points (24-20) after Cape Verde had created a difference of 10.
From the first quarter break, Adam Seiko and Eric Rwahwire knocked down threes and Uganda led (26-24) for the first time in the game.
The Silverbacks had no choice but to double team Tavares but this often left the Cape Verde shooters wide open for buckets.
Cape Verde led 43-35 at the end of the first half and Uganda had work to do in the second half.
Arthur Kaluma got into his element early in the third and knocked down three straight buckets from downtown to lead Uganda's search for points.
Cape Verde led 61-51 at the end of the three quarters.
Uganda struggled to get going in the final quarter until Seiko got hot and dropped two threes.
The lead was cut to four points going into the last two minutes but a turnover by Kaluma saw Cape Verde score to further stretch their lead.
Uganda were in the penalty and the Islanders kept converting on the line settle the contest and progress to the semis.
