Express’ intentions of having an experienced side on their return to continental football after a 13-year absence has been boosted after two significant signings ahead of their preliminary round game this weekend.
This is after the club yesterday announced the acquisition of the versatile Deus Bukenya and midfielder Nicholas Kasozi one-year deals to the delight of head coach Wasswa Bbosa.
“The new faces are definitely a huge addition to our squad because we all know we have to defend the league but also we have more games to play this season with the continent being the priority."
"So we need to have more options and I am sure the new players will certainly do a fantastic job,” Bbosa said of the duo.
The Red Eagles are preparing to face Sudanese outfit El Merreikh in the CAF Champions League Preliminary round first leg tie on Friday 10th September at the St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Bukenya is the more experienced having last featured for Botswana side Prisons XI after leaving Vipers with whom he won two league titles in 2015 and 2018.
He featured prominently as a holding midfielder and possesses the ability to shoot from range but can also play across the back four.
Kasozi meanwhile joins on a season long loan deal from relegated side Kyetume who he joined after a spell at KCCA and was recently called up to the Cranes ahead of the start of the World Cup Qualification campaign.
He also played under Bbosa during their time at SC Villa and will definitely add competition to the midfield positions.
Daniel Shabene, Mahad Kakooza, Abel Eturude and John Byamukama were the four central midfielders Bbosa employed for much of last including the now departed Ibrahim Kayiwa.
After Friday’s first leg, the Red Eagles are then expected to travel to Khartoum for the return leg set to take place on 18th September 2021.
