Express grateful as clubs benefit from Covid relief fund

It is said one does not know where they are going until they know where they have been.

And for six-time league champions Express who have made important financial strides over the past two seasons, they are certainly aware of the importance any financial contribution can make towards  the well-being of the club.

The club was consequently grateful about news of Uganda Premier League sides receiving FIFA Covid-19 relief funds from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa)

“The funds have come in handy as we are preparing for the new season,” Express CEO Isaac Mwesigwa said, adding, “Clubs did not have money, so it’s fine,” he added.

And as allocated, the 16 Uganda Premier League (SUPL) clubs received a combined Shs527m, giving each a round figure of Shs33m.

The money will come in handy for the Red Eagles ahead of the league start tentatively set for a mid-October run.

The club  have struggled financially in recent years before the return of Kiryowa Kiwanuka as club president ushered in corporate sponsorship that is led by leading betting company Betway since 2018.

They finished ninth on the 16-team log last season and will be looking to  better that return following another off-season spending spree under head coach Wasswa Bbosa.
