Ssimwogerere projects bright future after Express earn first point

Express FC earned their first point of the 2019/2020 Uganda Premier League season after playing out a 1-all draw with Bright Stars at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Frank Senyondo gave Express a third minute lead pouncing to slot home after Frank Kalanda’s shot was parried into his path by Bright Stars goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato.

But Bright Stars equalized through Joseph Janjali who rounded goalkeeper Joshua Adea after a sublime pass from Methodius Jungu.

“I’m happy that the boys played well but made only one mistake and we conceded. The keeper took a goal-kick then he slipped and fell down then they caught us on the counter and scored. That is the only mistake we made but all in all they played a good game and I’m happy with it,” coach George Ssimwogerere remarked.

In a game in which he fielded a number of the youngsters he signed in the off-season, Ssimwogerere was bullish about his team’s future prospects.

“There is a big difference last season I had people of one year, six months and the level of development was not going to increase because they had short term contracts and they were a little older.

“But this team we shall be with it for long and each day they will improve because they are young and want to play for the national team in various competitions like Chan so I’m happy that I’m seeing what I’m trying to build and good things don’t come early,” Ssimwogerere explained.

The coach also dispelled the notion that his team went on the defensive after taking a third minute lead against opponents who also came into the game having lost their opening fixture.

“That’s how you saw it but the goal we conceded was not a move it was just an error as I explained earlier we didn’t sit back that is the way we decided to play in the first half even if we had not scored and changed in the second half. I play like that in the first half then change in the second half,” he added.

The result left both Express and Bright Stars with a point after two games behind the likes of KCCA and Vipers who have maximum points from the opening two games.
