Edgar Lemerigar: Lady Rugby Cranes much better after World Cup qualifiers

The Uganda Lady Rugby Cranes may have failed to make it to the World Cup but head coach Edgar Lemerigar is confident the lessons learnt from the qualifiers in South Africa will only make the team better.

“The girls had a great experience right from the first day here in Uganda in camp, great team chemistry and environment and South Africa changed their minds even more. They themselves know they could have done better but some areas still need more work,” the tactician revealed after the campaign.

The team still has work to do especially in the area of strength and conditioning which was clearly exposed against well-conditioned sides like Kenya and South Africa.

Uganda lost 89-05 to hosts South Africa before falling 37-05 to neighbours Kenya in their second game. A15-all draw against Madagascar ensured the side left the qualifying stage with something to smile about.

South Africa got the ticket to represent the continent at the world stage after winning all their three games with maximum bonus points. The Kenya Lionesses grabbed the opportunity for a second chance in the repechage while Madagascar came third with Uganda at the base of the log.

“I was called upon to try and fix something and I believe that is what I am doing. We can once again boast that women’s 15s competitive rugby exists. The easy part was to get the players to try and play,”

The qualifiers also presented an opportunity for Lemerigar to share notes and learn from the best on the continent, something he believes should make him better.

“As a person and as a coach, I have made friends with the entire SA staff and we exchanged a few ideas as well. We are not the same team. The Lay Cranes are a new team.”

For some of the ladies on the team, attention is now on the Africa 7s set for October in Tunisia. Helen Buteme’s charges go into the tournament targeting a direct ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.
