Rugby Cranes surrender to Kenya

The Uganda Rugby Cranes saw their hopes of landing a first Elgon Cup trophy erased in a 16-5 loss to neighbours Kenya at Kyadondo on Saturday.

All the Cranes had to do was hold onto their three-point lead gained from the 16-13 win in Kisumu three weeks ago but the returning Kenya Simbas stars ensured there were no celebrations for the home side.

Uganda started the game exactly how they wanted to as  Ronald Kanyanya crossed the white line to get the crowd off their seats.

The lead in the contest had now grown to 8 points in favour of the Cranes and the pressure was on Kenya.

The visitors responded through wing Billy Odhiambo who collected from a suspected forward pass and touched down to make it 5-5 in the game.

Uganda still had a 3-point advantage in the overall contest at that point.

With Uganda giving away a number of penalties thereafter, Kenya went into the lead from a Jacob Ojee penalty and the two sides went into the break with the visitors leading 8-5 and the overall contest tied at 21-all.

After the break, nother Ojee penalty made it 11-5 as Kenya started running away not only with the game but also the cup.

Ojee, eventually named man of the match, would later find a try to confirm the win the noisy neighbours.

The 16-5 victory was just enough for Kenya to defend the Elgon cup and prolong Uganda's wait for a first victory since 2015.

In the ladies tie, the Kenya Lionesses destroyed their Ugandan counterparts 35-5 for a 79-18 aggregate victory.
