Rugby Cranes Sevens out to secure Hong Kong ticket

When the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series Round Two gets underway this weekend in Montevideo, Uruguay, Uganda will be looking to seal qualification to the HSBC qualifiers in Hong Kong.

The Uganda Cranes finished seventh out of 16 teams in the first round held in Vina del Mar, Chile.

They must maintain the pace in Uruguay and stay among the top eight teams after the two rounds to have a shot at the HSBC qualifiers.

Having won two of their opening games of the tournament in Chile, the Cranes fell to Germany in the last group game before losing to Hong Kong in the quarterfinal clash.

The two losses were followed by defeat to Tonga to put the two-time African Champions in seventh place.

A bulk of the 13 tries scored by Tolbert Onyango’s charges came in the opening games against Italy and
Paraguay.

In Uruguay the Cranes will face Jamaica, Brazil and Hong Kong in group B.

A repeat of the performance in Vina del Mar or even better is enough for Uganda to earn a top 8 overall finish in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series and qualify for Hong Kong Sevens, where they will compete for one slot in the next season of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series.
