Rugby Africa Cancel 2020 International season

Rugby Africa has resolved to cancel the 2020 international season.

The committee held an online meeting to discuss the future of the sport this calendar year considering the Corona Virus scare.

In consultation with member federations including Uganda, the committee believes it's best if the season is cancelled to allow teams prepare for 2021 whenever public gatherings are allowed in different countries.

“Too much uncertainty still hangs over the development of the pandemic in the coming weeks for us (Rugby Africa) to be able to calmly resume competitions,”  said Dr. Elvis Tano, who heads the confederation’s medical commission.

Rugby Africa’s top priority remains the health and safety of the athletes, supporters, staff, partners and local communities.

The cancellation of the international season will affect all competitions that were scheduled for this year.

These include the U20 Barthes Trophy (initially scheduled for April 18), Rugby Africa Cup for both men and women (initially scheduled for May 30), Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens (scheduled for October 31) among others.

Former Uganda Rugby Union president and now Vice President Rugby Africa Andrew Owor said there is a possibility of organising some action for the different countries before the year ends.

"Rugby Africa will be able to organise a few matches by the end of the year but due to the size and diversity of Africa, a more localised approach will be useful," he said.

Uganda was scheduled to play Kenya in the annual Elgon Cup clash but that will still have to wait for clearance from the two central governments.
