Rugby Africa back to business as uncertainty rocks Ugandan rugby

The COVID-19 pandemic has had its effects on all aspects of life and sport has felt the impact.

There has been no rugby action since March 2020 and the next piece of action is now slated for March 2021.

This is after Rugby Africa released the calendar for the continental championships for the year 2021.

Rugby Africa (men’s and women’s Cups, Rugby Africa (men’s and women’s) Sevens and the U20 Barthes Trophy are the tournaments to be played.

Former Uganda Rugby Union chairman and now Rugby Africa Vice President Andrew Owor revealed that teams have already started preparing for the events.

“With the first round of competitions potentially kicking off in March, teams are already preparing, and by all accounts, both unions and players are thrilled at the opportunity to participate in the game,” Andrew Owor noted.

The Rugby Africa Cup Pools for the men will kick off in July at different venues across the continent.

The communication from Rugby Africa however comes at a time of uncertainty in Ugandan rugby.

Reports indicate that the Rugby Union has resigned for the year and will wait until 2022 when, hopefully, the COVID-19 pandemic is out of the way.

The union has not come out to clearly confirm or deny the reports in the media but some have intimated that a super series will be organized to usher in the league and other activities later in the year.

For a country to take part in the Rugby Africa activities, activities have to be ongoing locally.

Recently the national Sevens team was in camp in preparation for the upcoming events.

It remains to be seen whether Ugandan local rugby will resume to facilitate participation of national teams in international engagements.
