The 39-year-old has not played at a Grand Slam since reaching the semifinals of the 2020 Australian Open, while this year’s French Open sees him return to Roland Garros for the first time since a semifinal appearance in 2019 (having also skipped the three previous editions).

After undergoing two knee surgeries last year, the 20-time Grand Slam champion is carefully doling out his playing time, with the goal of being at his peak for Wimbledon in a couple of months’ time.
“It’s difficult to abandon all that [the touring life as a tennis professional] without trying to come back again,” Federer said.
“The year has been ultra-long for me, with the double operation and the pandemic. We’re on this train until Wimbledon, we’re just going to concentrate on that, and the rest afterwards, see what happens. The comeback is the priority.”
Federer, who has just one French Open title (2009) to his name (but has been a runner-up no less than four times), will be amongst the favourites at this year’s tournament despite seeing little playing time over the past 18 months.

“I’m sure if things start going well at Roland Garros and he’s making a little run, then he’s not gonna just be thinking about Wimbledon,” former top five player Jimmy Arias said of Federer’s chances.
“Obviously, he’s gonna want to win any Major that he can, and he probably still is the third or fourth best player on clay right now, so why not? If things open up for him, why not?”
He added, “Roger is undoubtedly in the mix, and you can’t count him out at any time.”
